SAIC Awarded Energy Savings Performance Contract by the U.S. Department of Energy

SAN DIEGO and MCLEAN, Va., Feb 09, 2009 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX News Network/ -- Company to Implement a Wide Range of Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy and Water Conservation Projects at Federal Facilities

Science Applications International Corporation (NYSE: SAI) today announced it has been awarded an Energy Savings Performance Contract (ESPC) by the U.S. Department of Energy to design, construct, and obtain financing for projects that will reduce energy and water consumption and costs, and promote the use of renewable energy technologies across federal agencies. The multiple award, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract has a five year base period of performance, two two-year options and a total contract ceiling of $5 billion if all options are exercised. Work will be performed by SAIC's design-build subsidiary, The Benham Companies LLC.

ESPC enables the government to design, construct, and obtain financing for energy savings projects, with payments made to contractors over time from the reduction in utility bills, which are paid by the agency's appropriated funds. The contract will help the government to meet its challenges of reducing energy consumption, increasing the use of renewable energy, and decreasing water consumption. Under the contract, SAIC will design, construct, and obtain financing for energy savings projects as required.

The contract will help meet the goals of the DOE's Transformational Energy Action Management (TEAM) Initiative, a department-wide effort aimed at reducing energy intensity across the nationwide DOE complex by 30 percent. It will also help meet aggressive goals for increasing energy efficiency throughout the federal government laid out by President Bush through Executive Order 13423, which directed federal agencies to reduce energy intensity and greenhouse gas emissions; substantially increase use and efficiency of renewable energy technologies; adopt sustainable design practices; and reduce petroleum use in federal fleets.
